Tracy Brabin, born and raised in Batley, has a long-standing commitment to West Yorkshire, a region she deeply cherishes as it is also the home of many of her family members. Her diverse career spans three decades in the entertainment industry, notably including roles in Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and as a writer for shows like Hollyoaks and Shameless. However, her passion for public service and community improvement has always paralleled her acting career. Tracy has been a staunch Labour supporter since publicly endorsing the party in the 1997 general election, and her political engagement has grown ever since.

In May 2021, Tracy was elected as the first Mayor of West Yorkshire, bringing a strong Labour perspective to regional governance. Her leadership is characterized by a firm commitment to enhancing public services, particularly transport, safety, and sustainability initiatives across the region.

Transforming Transport

Understanding the pivotal role of public transport in community connectivity and economic development, Tracy has made it a cornerstone of her administration. She has already taken significant steps by beginning to bring bus services under local control, emphasizing that “the real work starts now.” Her vision includes a comprehensive revamp of the bus network, enhancing bus stations and shelters, and implementing a single ticketing system to streamline travel across West Yorkshire.

Looking to the future, Tracy is ambitiously planning to introduce a tram system between Leeds and Bradford, aiming to start construction by 2028. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revolutionise the region’s transport infrastructure, including new walking and cycling routes, to better connect people to jobs and training opportunities.

Enhancing Public Safety and Community Services

Tracy’s first term saw significant advancements in community safety. She established the UK’s first women’s safety unit, increased security measures across public transport, and introduced a new PCSO team to ensure safety on buses and at stations. Tracy is also focused on reducing crime more broadly in West Yorkshire, planning to work closely with the police to establish a serious violence strategy in her next term.

Her commitment to the community extends to tackling the root causes of crime. She plans to introduce more services that guide young people towards training and employment opportunities, helping to divert them away from the criminal justice system.

Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Addressing climate change is also a priority for Tracy. She has pledged to decarbonise housing in West Yorkshire to reduce heating costs and carbon footprints, underscoring her dedication to creating a sustainable future for the region.

A Vision for the Future

Tracy Brabin’s re-election campaign is built on the foundation of tangible achievements and a clear vision for the future. She is determined to use her role to make West Yorkshire a safer, more connected, and environmentally sustainable place to live. “We can connect people to training and jobs, as well as speed up our economy,” she asserts, highlighting her holistic approach to regional development.

Tracy Brabin is not just running to continue her job as Mayor; she is campaigning to build on the progress already made, ensuring that West Yorkshire remains a vibrant and thriving region under Labour leadership.
