Steve Rotheram’s journey from a bricklayer to the first Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region is a story of dedication and resilience. Born in Kirkby, Liverpool, to a working-class family, Steve has witnessed firsthand the challenges and opportunities within his community. As one of eight children, Steve’s early life was shaped by the ethos of hard work and community service, influenced by his father, a forklift driver and local Labour councillor.

Elected as Metro Mayor on 5 May 2017 with a commanding 59% of the vote, Steve has been at the forefront of driving prosperity and expanding opportunities across Liverpool City Region. His commitment is deeply personal, rooted in his own experiences and his family’s history in the region.

“For too long, too many decisions about our future have been taken too far away by people who don’t understand or care about our region,” Steve declares. He emphasizes the need for local governance, where decisions are made by those who live in and truly understand the community.

Steve’s vision for Liverpool City Region is comprehensive and ambitious. It includes attracting global investment, modernizing transport systems, transforming education, planning future housing, and fostering collaboration across communities to solve common problems.

“We are a region that pioneered radical social reforms and created world-class businesses. We are innovators and pioneers, where we see problems, we devise our own solutions,” Steve asserts. His belief in the creativity and energy of the local people is a cornerstone of his policy and vision.

Steve Rotheram stands for a city region that is ambitious, fair, green, connected, and united. His approach to governance is based on joined-up thinking and strategic, democratically accountable leadership — principles that have benefited places like London, and which he believes can bring similar benefits to Liverpool.

As Metro Mayor, Steve aims to harness the potential of Liverpool City Region, inspired by its rich history and driven by a forward-looking set of values and aspirations. “Devolution is our chance to deal with the things that matter most to our City Region and create a future rooted in our shared values and aspirations,” he notes.

Steve’s personal commitment is clear: “I stood for Metro Mayor to make a difference where it really matters – in the place I was born and will always call home.”
