Greater Manchester Mayor: Vote Andy Burnham
Andy Burnham’s political career has been marked by his deep commitment to the people and prosperity of Greater Manchester. Having joined the Labour Party at the tender age of 15 and subsequently held various key roles in government, Andy was first elected as the Mayor of Greater Manchester in May 2017 and has been a force for positive change ever since.
A Visionary Leader for Greater Manchester
Under Andy Burnham’s leadership, Greater Manchester has seen substantial strides towards becoming a more integrated, sustainable, and equitable region:
-
Public Transport Revolution: Andy has been instrumental in bringing buses back under public control, aiming to create an integrated, London-style public transport system. This includes the ambitious ‘Bee Network’ plan to build over 100km of safe, segregated walking and cycleways by the end of the year.
-
Sustainable Development and Housing: The Greater Manchester Spatial Framework has been rewritten under his watch, drastically reducing the amount of green belt land allocated for development by over 60%. Andy has also set ambitious targets for the region to become zero-carbon by 2038 and to build 50,000 truly affordable homes, including 30,000 for social rent.
-
Innovative Education Paths: Andy is set to introduce the Greater Manchester Baccalaureate (MBacc), starting at age 14, to provide a technical education pathway that connects young people with opportunities in the region’s fast-changing economy. This initiative aims to offer a viable and equal alternative to the university route, ensuring young people in Greater Manchester have access to high-quality education and training that lead directly to employment.
-
Environmental Initiatives: Despite government pressures, Andy continues to oppose the introduction of a charging Clean Air Zone, advocating instead for an investment-led approach to reduce air pollution.
-
Enhanced Autonomy through Devolution: Thanks to the Trailblazer devolution deal Andy negotiated with the government, starting from April 2025, Greater Manchester will gain significantly more control over how public funding is spent, providing the region with the flexibility to tailor solutions to local needs.
Committed to Community and Innovation
Andy Burnham’s tenure has not only focused on large-scale infrastructure and policy changes but has also been about making Greater Manchester a beacon of progressive urban development and governance. His commitment extends to social issues, such as improving housing standards and ensuring landlords no longer profit from renting sub-standard properties.
Andy firmly believes that the best for Greater Manchester is yet to come. His vision for the future is filled with groundbreaking initiatives that promise to transform the region into a thriving, equitable community where every resident has the opportunity to succeed.
Andy Burnham is not just running for re-election; he is striving to continue the transformation of Greater Manchester into a leading example of urban development and community-focused governance in the UK.
