Record of Delivery

Under Emily’s leadership, Merseyside has seen significant reductions in crime, with a 13% drop overall in the past year alone. This achievement was highlighted in the final public Scrutiny Meeting of her term, where it was reported that there were nearly 17,000 fewer crimes in 2023 compared to the previous year. Specific areas of progress include a more than 50% decrease in firearms discharges, a 13% reduction in knife crime, over 17% fewer residential burglaries, and a decrease of more than 20% in thefts from individuals.

Strengthening Local Policing

Emily has been proactive in her efforts to increase the number of police officers on the streets, with an impressive addition of 665 officers during her term. This increase surpasses initial promises, thanks to determined efforts to secure extra funding. “During my term, the number of police officers patrolling our streets has increased by 665 – that’s 65 more than we were promised because of our determination to secure extra funding and strengthen local policing,” Emily states, showcasing her commitment to bolstering police presence and capability.

Challenges and Commitment

Despite these successes, Emily is candid about the challenges that persist, largely due to years of cuts and insufficient funding from the Conservative government. Merseyside remains 450 officers short of its 2010 numbers, with a daunting £22 million in savings still to be found over the next five years. Yet, Emily remains undeterred, emphasizing her dedication to the continued progress of the region. “There has been so much progress but there is much more to do. I am determined and passionate about driving this work forward,” she affirms.

Conclusion

As she seeks re-election, Emily Spurrell promises to maintain her proactive, visible approach and to keep standing up as a strong voice for Merseyside. Her track record, dedication, and clear vision for the future underscore her readiness to continue making Merseyside a safer place for all its residents. Her leadership is not just about maintaining safety; it’s about building a community where every resident can thrive, free from the fear of crime.
